Modernist Rock Crystal Mobile Pendant
A remarkable modernist pendant in 18ct gold; a girandole, if you will, stripped right back to the bone. The girandole, three pear-shaped drops hanging from a central bow, was one of the great court jewels of the 17th century (in Europe, at least). Here the jewelled bow is gone. In its place are four sweeping arcs of thick gold wire, hooked loop-through-loop like one of Alexander Calder's mobiles, with three polished, pear-shaped drops of rock crystal hanging freely from the ends. It's a fitting reinvention: the word "girandole" first meant a spinning firework, and indeed each drop on this piece swings and turns on its own.
There's a strong mid-century Scandinavian feel here too, in the spirit of Torun Bülow-Hübe's famous Dew Drops for Georg Jensen: honest materials, nothing hidden, and the workings of the jewel left on show as part of the design. The quartz is chosen for its clarity, not its carats, and the domed drops act like little lenses, picking up the colours around them and magnifying whatever lies beneath - akin to the pools-of-light so prized y the Victorians. Simply beautiful; a sculpture you can wear.
