Vintage Pearl 'Caviar Tin' Charm
Delectable seed pearls represent caviar in an old-style roll-top tin can. Something of an unusual vintage charm, modelled in sterling silver with London hallmarks from 1980. Strictly for those with a taste for the finer things. Presumably.
The first generation of tin cans were so thick that they had to be hammered open. Useful for long-term storage of perishable food, without the use of loads of salt, but presumably extremely annoying once you needed to access the contents. 1858 saw the invention of the first patented can opener (E. Warner of Connecticut), and in 1866 one J. Osterhoudt patented the can with key opener. Although there have been countless improvements to the can opener since the mid 19th century, including, quite remarkably, an electric version first sold in 1931, Osterhoudt's key opener remains in use to this day.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
