Victorian Pique Cross Brooch
A striking pique cross pendant dating from the mid 19th century. The gold and silver inlay work is particularly finely done with flowers and leaves and curling stems. The overall shape is a Cross Potent with T-shaped crossbars at each of its four ends that resemble crutches (hence it also being known as the crutch cross). The cross potent has been found on European and Chinese pottery dating back to the neolithic, and was incorporated into the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the immediate aftermath of the first crusade. By the 19th century it had become an emblem for Roman Catholicism, directly based on the Jerusalem cross. Many Christians, especially those with some connection to Jerusalem or who have visited the city, still choose to wear the cross.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
