Victorian OMC Belcher Ring
Victorian solitaire belcher ring dating from the turn of the 20th century, circa 1900. It's set with a chunky old mine cut diamond with cushion profile suspended within cut-out claw settings. Crafted in 18 carat gold.
The name, belcher ring, is said to have been inspired by the famous Regency Period prize-fighter Jem Belcher (or, by other accounts, his brother Thomas). Jem was England's champion boxer between 1800 and 1805, and is said to have worn a diamond ring with the stone set in a deep recess carved out of the head, secured by huge prongs that kept the table flush with the rest of the gold - specially designed to keep the stone extra secure while he was throwing punches. Truth or fantasy? We'll probably never know, but there's enough to it to keep the Belcher name alive 200+ years later...

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
