Victorian Enamel Mourning Locket
Crossed reversed torches were signs of mourning that appear on Greek and Roman funerary monuments—a torch pointed downwards symbolizes death, while a torch held up symbolizes life, truth and the regenerative power of flame.*
This silver locket, a masterpiece of Victorian mourning jewellery, features the crossed torches as its central motif - picked out in silver over black enamel. Around the torches are the words IN MEMORY OF, and further out we find elaborate, abstract foliate scrolls. The creator has, rather cleverly, enhanced the contrast set up by the enamel and metal with a matte, brushed finish to the silver - which stands out next to the glossy shine of the enamel. The artistry is superb, with intricate engraving and and enamelled bail. The original fittings remain intact inside, including a glass pane that remains present.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
