Victorian Blue Enamel Heart Necklace
A spectacular revivalist necklace dating from the late Victorian era, but harking back to Georgian designs of around 100 years earlier; potentially even designed to replicate a set of jewels with a royal connection.
The necklace, crafted in silver throughout, is centred around a puffed heart pendant drop that's pavé set with glistening white paste gemstones. The front half, where it sits over the shoulders and down the chest, comprises navette-shaped panels finished in cobalt-blue guilloché enamel (aka Bristol Glass, and very much remeniscent of the Firmament and Enfantment rings popularised by Marie Antoinette in the 1780s), each one decorated with more white paste stones, and little floral links in between the navettes. The backs are fluted - again reminiscent of earlier, late 18th century jewels.
But what's the royal connection, I hear you ask? Well look at this necklace by Tiffany & Co. (circa 1917). It's pretty similar, right? Could this, too, be a copy of one of the Italian crown jewels? We may never know; they've been locked away in vault at the Bank of Italy in Rome since 1946 when King Umberto II entrusted the jewels to the national bank for safekeeping, just before a referendum abolished the Italian monarchy.
