Georgian Silver Spoon Ring
Spoon rings are said to have originated in the 1600s in England, exchanged as betrothal rings or love tokens in defiance the established class boundaries. This was a time when flatware - silver cutlery, often personalised with a the family arms or monogram - was a status symbol (think "the family silver") and a way of showing off your wealth over dinner. All kinds of domestic items were fashioned in solid silver, not just cutlery, from tea services to grape scissors to snuff boxes, but these were luxury items far beyond the reach of most... so the story goes, that servants would steal teaspoons from the masters' to re-purpose them into betrothal rings, a symbol of love and commitment that simultaneously transcended social and economic barriers, and sealed the love-bond with a risky act (the theft).
This one was made sometime during the first half of the 19th century. The profile of the spoon is still discernible, with the London hallmarks (from 1810) still present and ornately engraved detailing to the outside.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
