Georgian Opaline Glass Flower Earrings
Georgian opaline glass earrings dating from the early 19th century. The drops are formed as five-petalled flowers - possibly pansies - the petals formed from elongated opaline glass hearts arranged around a white paste at the centre. They dangle from another, larger, opaline glass heart with gold ear wires.
"Opaline glass, also called opal paste, was made in Derbyshire, England, and in France. This is a faux gem made of glass with a pale, variegated, milky appearance caused by the separation of various oxides during the cooling process of its manufacture. It was usually cut en cabochon and tinged with pink/blue by setting the paste over rose coloured metallic foil. The English firm of Wickes and Netherton was one of the companies known for its production and advertised it as 'false-work'. Although it bears little resemblance to the gemstone for which it was named, opaline glass was favoured for daytime fashion and was particularly attractive when combined with white paste."

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
