Georgian Carved Chalcedony Brooch
An unusual and visually striking Georgian brooch dating from the early 1800s. It's round, and formed from a single piece of carved yellow chalcedony with an ornate locket compartment offset from the centre of the dome. The gold frame around the stone is ornately worked with rococo-inspired designs, and the locket compartment is home to a woven lock of hair and adorned with tiny rope and granulated decoration. A gold panel to the reverse is inscribed with a monogram: FCH.
The hair and monogram may suggest it's a mourning piece, but the joyful, sunshine colour of the stone and the ornate embellishment suggest to me that the sentiment may have been romantic rather than mourning.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
