Egyptian Revival Powder Compact Pendant
Very cool Egyptian Revival powder compact dating from the 1920s wave of Egyptomania that was sparked by the discovery, in 1922, of Tutankhamun's undisturbed tomb by the then relatively unknown English archaeologist Howard Carter and his (still) relatively unknown Egyptian workforce: Ahmed Gerigar, Gad Hassan, Hussein Abu Awad and Hussein Ahmed Said amongst countless others.
The outside is beautifully decorated with colourful guilloché enamel. The front features a hinged pale yellow disc with a figure and hieroglyphs* surrounded by a lotus flower border picked out in lapis blue, carnelian red and pale pink. The back is the same pale yellow vitreous enamelling as the front, with wonderful engine turned texturing underneath that shimmers as it catches the light.
Interestingly, the figure is depicted wearing a Deshret, the crown of Lower Egypt... but the crown is the wrong colour; it's blue rather than red. I'd imagine that this was an aesthetic choice, more than anything else, the enameler exercising a little artistic licence with the colour scheme rather than precise historical accuracy.
A pendant bail at the top allows it to be worn on a chain, and opening it up reveals a small round mirror in the lid and the original (apparently unused) powder puff. The 935 silver stamp to the jump ring suggests it was likely made in Germany.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
