Art Deco Flame Fusion Ruby Ring
Superb Art Deco solitaire ring dating from the 1930s. The stone is a stunning flame fusion ruby displaying as vivid a red as physically possible - it's electric. At 7.20 carats, the scale is an equal match to the striking colour with big, triangular facets designed to show bright flashes of colour as they bounce the light back out of the ruby. Built in 9ct yellow gold with split-claw mounts.
Synthetic, or lab grown, gemstones were a relatively new phenomenon in the 1930s, the technique for producing sapphire and ruby in the laboratory having been perfected by Auguste Verneuil a few decades earlier. Such stones - known as 'flame fusion' ruby/sapphire - caused something of a sensation when they became available to the public around 1905. Their chemical composition is identical to naturally occurring counterparts (corundum, to use the correct mineralogical term for rubies and sapphires), but these stones were created by humans in a laboratory - humans who had recreated the extreme heat and pressure within the Earth's crust to produce some of nature's most mesmerising and coveted treasures.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
