Antique Shark Tooth Pendant
A rare antique shark tooth amulet dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1900. The tooth, possibly from a short-fin mako, has a yellow gold cap with loop and jump ring for wear on a chain.
In the royal courts of medieval Europe, fossilised shark teeth were used to detect poisoned food or drink. Earlier than that, they were believed to be the petrified tongues of snakes that had been turned to stone by Saint Paul. And, earlier still, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder wrote that fossilised shark teeth were little meteorites that rained down onto the Earth during lunar eclipses.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
