Antique Double Albert Watch Chain
A complete, all original, solid gold double Albert chain with double dog clips and a t-bar. The graduated links are individually stamped, a couple with the maker's mark, and there's a full English hallmark spread over the various components of the chain. It's crisp, with minimal wear, heavy, and the bright yellow gold has taken on a slight antique warmth over the past 106 years. A shade under 16.5 inches in length.
Starting life as a pocket watch chain, this double Albert was made by Herbert Bushell & Son Ltd, a family-run workshop on Northampton Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. The firm was established by Herbert Bushell in 1894, working under his own initials, HB, until 1909 when the sponsor mark was updated to include his son. Being made in 1920, just after the First World War, it marks the beginning of the end for the watch chain as the wristwatch began to gain popularity. They are, obviously, mostly worn as necklaces today, but this is not a new trend; it's said that wives and sweethearts of soldiers off fighting in the war would wear their lovers' watch chains, naturally left behind in England, as necklaces - as keepsakes - back then too.
This piece bears the HB&S mark on the chain and on all of its findings.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
