Aesthetic Movement Brooch
Sweet antique Aesthetic Movement brooch dating from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1880. It features beautiful engravings of Japanese-inspired motifs from nature - bamboo and grasses, birds and butterflies - surrounded by a granulated border. Crafted in sterling silver, its' unusual shape resembles that of a stylised scallop shell which gifts the brooch its own unique charm.
The Aesthetic Movement in England drew inspiration from the London International Exhibition of 1862, where artisans and laypeople alike were captivated by the various displays of Japanese arts and crafts. As the movement grew, the discourse revolved around the phrase "Art for Art's sake", and works emerged in a simple style incorporating Japanese elements and motifs - birds, flowers, plant foliage, and other scenes from nature.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
