1970s Titanium Landscape Pendant by Dust
Cool vintage pendant by Dust Jewellery. It dates from the 1970s, the main panel - crafted in platinum - depicts a Scottish landscape, beautifully coloured, with silver dove flying in the foreground. It's signed Titanium. Dust. to the reverse and offered on a fine silver chain.
Dust was founded off the back of a chance meeting, in 1974, on a flight from Vancouver to Montreal. John Flegg and Norman Grant immediately hit it off, realising they were both ready for a new challenge, and two years later they founded Dust Jewellery. In Flegg's own words: "Norman had been running a craft jewellery business and Dust Jewellery put technology behind it". Their most notable innovation was in the use of titanium, and they quickly became world leaders in small-scale titanium work. During the late '60s, Grant revitalised the Scottish jewellery scene, working out of his garden shed, and riding the wave of the Swinging Sixties, he created playful, colourfully enamelled pieces inspired by Scottish coastal landscapes and works from the Art Nouveau movement. But with Dust, the pair took a giant leap forward: adapting photo-etching to suite the jewellery medium, installing German finishing equipment, and refining their casting techniques. Titanium is extremely difficult to work with, being harder than steel and lighter than aluminium, but the results can be spectacular - and Flegg and Grant relished the technological challenge. Their pieces use simple, stylised forms with subjects borrowed from the natural world, often worked in 3D and using anodised titanium, along with silver and enamel, to striking effect. Clients included the likes of Billy Connolly and Elton John, and queen Elizabeth used a silver Swan Vestas matchbox made by the company to light the first of the 1977 Jubilee Bonfires. Flegg and Grant generously shared information about the technology and techniques they used, giving demonstrations and presenting seminars across the country, and their workshop doors were open to anyone interested in their craft.
