18th Century Navette Cluster Ring
A striking Portuguese navette cluster ring dating from the late 18th century, circa 1780. It's set with a glistening array of foil-backed white beryl gemstones, 13 in total, the outer stones have each been specially cut to fit the profile of the head, and they're arranged around a beautiful moval cut centre. The stones are set in silver, and bordered by impeccable granulated goldwork. Built in 18ct rose gold.
Portuguese jewellery from this era is distinctive, and quite different from other European works, in large part because of the gemstones used. Mines in Brazil (part of what was known at the time as the "United Kingdoms" of the Algarve, Brazil, and Portugal) were rich in deposits of topaz, chrysoberyl quartz, and beryl varieties, all of which were shipped back to the jewellers in Portugal, who had unprecedented access to an abundance of these exotic, often near colourless, stones.

We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
