Victorian Cyclamen Flower Pendant
Cute antique disc pendant with a beautifully enamelled flower: a cyclamen, aka sowbread or swinebread. "Pliny the Elder describes how it was called in antiquity by Roman country men: tūber terrae, literally "earth truffle" or also amulētum "amulet", because it was believed that evil spells had no effect where it grew.
"In many languages Cyclamen species are colloquially called by a name like the English sowbread or swinebread (because they are said to be eaten by pigs), based on Medieval Latin panis porcinus: Saubrot in German, pain de pourceau in French, pan porcino in Italian and varkensbrood in Dutch." [Wikipedia]
This darling little pendant was made in Austria - likely Vienna - towards the end of the 19th century. It's crafted in silver, with assay marks on the bail, and a simple bobbled border framing the flower. And what a flower. The detail is impressive, especially given the medium.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
