George III Silver Sixpence Pendant
Sometime between 1787 and 1900 somebody decided to transform this silver coin into a wearable object. And while that little story is lacking in specifics, the object in question is proof of its accuracy. When we found it, it was attached to the end of a pocket watch chain, so the aforementioned mystery person had - for one reason or another - decided it was worth wearing with their Sunday Best. The coin is a 1787 George III silver sixpence (or half shilling), something of an unusual coin in that it wasn't struck by the Royal Mint, rather by the Bank of England and for one year only - 1787 - when it was given out to some of their favoured clients at Christmas. My best guess is that it was probably passed down the generations to whomever ultimately stuck in on the end of their watch chain.
Obverse: Older laureate and draped bust facing right. GEORGIVS.III.DEI.GRATIA. Reverse: Cruciform straight edged shields of Royal arms, around central garter star, crowns in the angles. M.B.F.ET.H.REX.F.D.B.ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.ET.E. If you're wondering what the lettering means... it's Latin, highly abbreviated, meaning: Georgian the Third by God's Grace. King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Lueneburg, Arch-Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
