Victorian Enamelled Shamrock Bracelet
A darling antique bracelet comprising verdant guilloché enamelled shamrocks. It dates from the late Victorian era, circa 1900, with beautifully worked links in silver with a pale gold wash.
There is no consensus over the actual botanical species of clover that is the true shamrock. The word comes from Irish, seamróg, which is the diminutive of the word seamair and means "young clover". The botanist Carl Linnaeus in his 1737 work Flora Lapponica identifies the shamrock as Trifolium pratense, mentioning it by name as Chambroch, with the following curious remark: "Hiberni suo Chambroch, quod est Trifolium pratense purpureum, aluntur, celeres & promtissimi roburis" ('The Irish call it shamrock, which is purple field clover, and which they eat to make them speedy and of nimble strength') [Source: wikipedia.org]
Linnaeus based his comments on Elizabethen authors such as Edmund Spenser, however there does appear to be some confusion here amongst the Elizabethans between the Irish name for young clover, seamróg, and (the rather delicious similar-looking) wood sorrel, seamsóg.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
