Victorian Kiwi Intaglio Ring
Charming Victorian signet ring with an intaglio carved pounamu panel, intaglio carved to depict a kiwi (the bird, not the fruit). It's built in 18ct gold, likely made in New Zealand during the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1890, when jewellery made from gold and pounamu was particularly fashionable on the islands.
Pounamu (aka greenstone) is nephrite, a variety of jade that has played an important part in Maori culture for thousands of years, fashioned as both tools and amulets. As a taonga (treasure, or treasured possession), the stone is said to increase its mana (spiritual power or prestige) each time it's passed down a generation.
Era: Victorian circa 1890

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
