Victorian "Flowers & Sickle" Pendant
Unusual Victorian pendant formed as a sickle, its blade curving around a bunch of flowers. The petals are beautifully enamelled; the flowers are daisies and forget-me-nots. It's crafted in 18 carat gold and dates from the latter half of the nineteenth century, circa 1880.
The symbolism is interesting, to say the least:
The sickle is a farming implement that, from our modern perspective, is most readily associated with the hammer forming the communist symbol representing unity between workers and peasants, designed in 1918 by Yevgeny Kamzolkin and adopted by the Soviet Union after the Russian Civil War. But our sickle pre-dates that, and it's possibly a metaphor for death or, more specifically, life cut short.
The daisy has long been associated with children, innocence, and purity. Medieval Christianity used the daisy to symbolise the virginity of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. "From the late medieval period onward, Mary is often depicted in art with daisies. For some examples, see the Wilton Diptych (1390s); Jan van Eyck's Madonna at the Fountain (1439); Fra Angelico's Annunication (1440s); Filipino Lippi's Anunciation (1480s); Francesco Botticini's Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints and Angels (1490s); Piero de Cosimo's Adoration of the Child (1490s); The Virgin and Child with Saints and Angels in a Garden (1500)."* Such associations meant that the daisy came to represent the innocence and virginity of children and young women, so does this pendant, perhaps, with the daisies and the forget-me-nots, represent a coming-of-age, possibly designed as a wedding gift?

Condition

A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
