Victorian "Château de Chillon" Enamel Brooch
A stunning antique brooch featuring a miniature enamel landscape painting of Lake Geneva with Chillon Castle forming the focal point. The Alps can be seen looming in the background, and the beauty of the scene is captured with astonishing detail. Set in a simple 18 carat gold mount, it dates from the late Victorian period, circa 1900.
Chillon has had a long and storied history, with the first written record of the château dating to 1005AD. During the 16th century Wars of Religion, the castle was used to house prisoners, inspiring Lord Byron's poem 'The Prisoner of Chillon'; his signature can be found etched into the walls of the castle's dungeon. The serene yet isolated backdrop of the snowy alps served as inspiration for many of the English Romantics, making it a popular tourist destination for the Victorians and a number of brooches depicting the idyllic locale were produced as souvenirs.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
