Rings of Resistance: "Our Daughters are Listening"
The idea of “one (wo)man, one vote” is so foundational to our democracy it’s hard to imagine it wasn’t ever thus, but it was not. Before the suffragettes of the early 20th Century there was universal male suffrage.
Life for the working class in Britain post industrial revolution was grim and since they were entirely excluded from the democratic process they had no power to effect change.
The Chartists (so named after the Peoples Charter of 1838) demanded all men over the age of 21 have a right to vote irrespective of wealth or class. The mass movement swept through the industrial centres of Britain. It was a vibrant, inclusive and radical counter culture centred around a massive network of newspapers, social clubs, churches, adult education, family events, radical poetry and song that built community, pride and class solidarity. They channelled working class anger to demand political reform.
Posy inscribed inside this band is inspired by the Chartist Anthem, a song by Ben Boucher (1847) and the line:
“...the sons of our sons are listening,”
…packs a hell of a punch. How often in the last 5 years have we been told we are living through unprecedented times? It certainly feels like some kind of pivotal moment in history. How will the future remember us? What will be able to tell our grandchildren about what we stood for or what we stood against? Or, to use a term borrowed from Layla Saad, are we being “good ancestors"?
We have made a small change to the words (we hope you’ll forgive us) in recognition of the 50% of the population ultimately not represented by the Peoples Charter of 1838 despite being a huge part of the movement.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
