Georgian L'Amour Intaglio Seal Fob
A red rose beneath the French world for love, l'amour, forms the subject of this elegant Georgian seal fob. It would, originally, have been worn on a chatelaine or pocket watch chain, the reverse-carved design used to seal letters to someone's dearest love. We think they look great worn as pendants. It's crafted in 9ct gold with carnelian agate base, dating from the early decades of the 19th century - circa 1820.
For many centuries, only a few varieties of rose were cultivated in England, in delicate shades of pink, red, and (of course) white - the alba, must, gallica, damask, and the moss rose. Roll on the 19th century, however, and imports from China and Madagascar (via France) introduced yellow, orange, and deep scarlet to the palette, allowing for the creation of new and vibrant hues. Traditionally, the red rose has long been associated with love, but the Language of Flowers features entries for a great many others all following the romantic theme:
White, for an innocent heart unacquainted with love. Pink, for grace. Burgundy, for unconscious beauty. Purple, for enchantment. Orange, for fascination. And yellow for infidelity.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
