Arts & Crafts Operculum Pendant
Charming antique pendant made during the English Craft Revival. The stone is an operculum, a colourful, domed section of shell that grows on the foot of the Turbo sparverius sea snail. When the snail retreats into its shell, it pulls its foot inside last, slotting the operculum over the aperture like a door to protect against danger. The pendant is a thing of simple beauty, capturing the very essence of the Craft Revival movement; it's crafted in silver and was made to conform to the asymmetrical shape of the stone which rests in a simple scalloped mount within a wire halo with curled embellishments at the top.
Joke: Why are operculate snails so successful in job interviews? Because they have a foot in the door.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
