Art Deco Ruby Solitaire Ring
Excellent ruby solitaire ring dating from the Art Deco period, circa 1920. The central stone is a bright and vibrant, 2.5 carat pinkish-red 'flame fusion' ruby, flanked by millegrain platinum stepped shoulders each set with three old cut diamonds. A gorgeous bimetal effect results from the use of rich 18ct yellow gold for the band.
Synthetic, or lab grown, gemstones were a relatively new phenomenon in the 1920s, the technique for producing sapphire and ruby in the laboratory having been perfected by Auguste Verneuil in the late 19th century. Such stones - known as 'flame fusion' rubies and sapphires - caused something of a sensation when they became available to the public around 1905. Their chemical composition is identical to naturally occurring counterparts (corundum, to use the correct mineralogical term for rubies and sapphires), but these stones were created by humans in a laboratory - humans who managed to successfully recreate the powerful forces within the Earth's crust to produce some of nature's most mesmerising and coveted treasures.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
