Art Deco Lucite Aquarium Brooch
A remarkable Art Deco period brooch formed as an aquarium complete with goldfish, bubbles, and vegetation. It's made of lucite, cleverly designed to give the impression of a fully 3D cuboid tank and reverse carved and painted in the manner of an Essex Crystal.
Lucite, a type of acrylic, was invented by the Dupont Corporation in 1931 with a 93% transparency rate, impressive strength to density ratio, and resistance to UV and water. These traits made lucite the material of choice for WWII aircraft bubble-tops and windows on account of its exceptional clarity, weight savings, and good resistance to bullets. It was also quickly adopted for use in jewellery and the decorative arts, where it's usually referred to as French lucite.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
