1887 Topsie Sinden in "Ondine" Box
A remarkable antique box made in 1887. It's crafted in sterling silver with a wooden interior and gold plating inside the lid. The outside of the lid features a depiction of Topsie (or Topsy) Sinden performing in 'Ondine' at The Empire, a theatre in Leicester Square London.
Topsie was a famous English dancer, actor and singer in late-Victorian England, who made her professional debut at just 6 years old. Here she is portrayed in a pink and white ballet costume, poised gracefully atop an open clam shell, floating through the sea. It is likely a depiction of a performance from a remake of the 1843 ballet by Jules Perrot and Fanny Cerrito, which follows a similar storyline to Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid'.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
