Victorian MIZPAH Cross Pendant
Charming antique cross pendant dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1880. It features the word MIZPAH alongside four applied gold passiflora flowers. The three symbols each represent faith: the cross for Christian faith; the Passion Flower, per the Language of Flowers means faith; and the Mizpah for faithfulness. Crafted in 9 carat gold.
MIZPAH, as a motif, was often employed in jewellery of this era. Pieces were exchanged as a token of faithfulness and protection, usually between two parties estranged by strife or distance. It's a Hebrew word, translating to English as "watchtower" - from the Old Testament, "the Lord watch between thee and me when we are absent one from another," it represents a bond between two people under the eyes of God.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
