Egyptian Revival Plique-à-Jour Pendant
An incredible 1920s Egyptian Revival pendant in the American Arts and Crafts style. Horus, god of sky and sun, is beautifully depicted in silver and fine plique-à-jour enamel with wings outspread and lotus flowers above. The sun on his headdress is represented by a vibrant pink garnet, and another sun glows brightly under foot. A single baroque pearl hangs below.
Horus was one of the most significant deities from the ancient Egyptian pantheon of gods. As well as his mastery of sun and sky, Horus was god of kingship, protection and healing, and served as the Egyptians' tutelary deity - their patron and guide. He was usually depicted as a falcon-headed man wearing the pschent, a tall red-and-white crown, a symbol of kingship over the kingdom of Egypt. His icon, the spectacular Eye of Horus, remains a well known protective talisman to this day.
"Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enamelling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time consumption (up to 4 months per item), with a high failure rate. The technique is similar to that of cloisonné, but using a temporary backing that, after firing, is dissolved by acid or rubbed away. A different technique relies solely on surface tension, for smaller areas." [Source: Wikipedia]
