Georgian "Three Cupids" Spinner Fob
Incredible Georgian spinner fob comprising three agate intaglio carvings of cupid-eros, the greco-roman god of love and desire. Portrayed as a winged cherub in all three, he can be seen:
- With lyre, serenading an owl (wisdom?) sat atop a pedestal. Possible reference to, "the greatest pleasure in life is love,” Euripides;
- Serenading Psyche who's perched atop a cliff face in butterfly form. "Love conquers all," Virgil (Omnia Vincit Amor);
- And finally Cupid with butterfly wings and Psyche clutched to his chest. This pairing - two bodies as one - symbolises the complete union of spiritual and physical love. "Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies,"
Aristotle.
The carvings, each on a different coloured agate hardstone, are incredibly finely detailed; Cupid and Athena's owl on carnelian, love conquers all is on white chalcedony, and the two as one is on yellow chalcedony. Crafted in 15 carat gold throughout, the seals turn on an axis and it dates from the early years of the 19th century, circa 1800.
