Victorian Ceylon Sapphire Belcher Ring
A big, chunky Victorian belcher ring dating from the latter half of the 19th century. The stone is a pale, 3.10ct Ceylon sapphire with just hint of purple/lilac to the watery blue hue. The 18ct gold mount features grooved embellishment down the shoulders and around band, and the prongs are formed from cut-out sections of the head.
The sapphire is a cushion-shaped 'native cut' with deep pavilion and slightly off-centre culet to maximise the colour saturation when viewed down the table. Indeed, the native cut is often assumed to be a more crude, less accurate choice of cut - verging on archaic - which is not always the case. When employed deliberately (and carefully) it's really very clever, the faceting arrangement spreads the colour to give the fashioned stone a stronger and more uniform blue.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
