1970s Mappin & Webb Parure
A spectacular parure by Mappin & Webb of Sheffield. It dates from the 1970s, crafted in a naturalistic style with triplets of beautifully textured leaves interspersed with vibrant red rubies, and shimmering white pearls. The suite comprises a riviere style necklace with matching bracelet, earrings and ring - all crafted in rich, 18 carat yellow gold. The various hallmarks confirm that it was made in Italy before being imported to the UK and retailed by one of England's most important jewellers. Although common up until the latter half of the 19th century, the parure - a full suite of matching jewellery - fell out of fashion with the rise of the Arts & Crafts movement, which favoured single, individual pieces (for a plethora of reasons we won't go into now). So it's rare to find such an impressive example dating from the 1970s; it was possibly a one-off commission. Very special indeed.
Mappin & Webb was established in 1775 when John Mappin registered his hallmarks with the Sheffield Assay Office. By 1858, the company's factory in Sheffield employed over 500 silversmiths and cutlers, soon after opening a shop on London's Oxford Street and by the end of the century they were granted a Royal Warrant as silversmith to Queen Victoria, the Russian Empire, and the Japanese Royal Household. The 20th century saw further expansion, with Royal Warrants granted by each successive British monarch (right up to King Charles III) and clientele that have included Marie Antoinette, Harry Houdini, Grace Kelly, The Maharaja Raj Rama Bhawair Singh, pioneering aviator Amy Johnson, Charles Dickens, and Winston Churchill.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
