1960s Ben Rosenfeld Bird Brooch
"Ben Rosenfeld was a talented jewellery designer and maker active between the years 1950 and 1977. Rosenfeld's jewellery was unusual for its liberal use of precious stones at a time, in the 1960s and 1970s, when they were expensive to purchase. He never stinted. When many designers were using more gold and cutting back on the number of precious stones, he did the reverse, probably because his clients wanted them and had the means to pay." - Modernist British Jewellery Designers 1960-1980, Mary Ann Wingfield (2021)
This gorgeous bird brooch was made by Ben Rosenfeld in 1969. Swinging London was, at the time, a vibrant hub of cultural and social change - known for its fashion, music, art, and economic prosperity. Rosenfeld slotted in perfectly, creating pieces for an international clientele of the rich and famous; his work was characterised by bold use of gold and colourful gemstones, intricate textures and patterns, and a mix of traditional craftsmanship with a modern spin. His works are highly collectable.
The bird is perched on a branch guarding a trio of eggs - diamond, sapphire, turquoise. The feathers are beautifully textured, eyes set with vivid red rubies, and its pose, with wings out and tail fanned up, gives the impression that the bird might spring to life. With English hallmarks for 18 carat gold and the BR Ld maker's mark. A bail has been added for wear as a pendant.

A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
