Art Deco Carved Leaf Collar
A spectacular antique rivière necklace dating from the Art Deco period, circa 1930. Carved citrine leaves are complemented by emerald beads - teardrop and spheres - set around the whole length of the necklace. It's a stunning aesthetic, and the craftsmanship is nothing short of divine. Secured with a later added clasp dating from the 1960s.
Art Deco, short for ‘Arts Décoratifs’, is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design, that originated in France and Austria during the early 20th century - driven by the likes of Louise Cartier, Léon Bakst (for the Ballets Russes), Auguste Perret, and many others across the various disciplines in decorative arts. The style flourished in the USA and Europe throughout the 1920s and ‘30s, taking its name from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris (although the movement wasn’t actually referred to as ‘Art Deco’ until the 1960s).
Skilled craftsmanship combined with modernist designs, often incorporating materials and themes from ancient Egypt and the Far East, give jewellery from this era its distinctive aesthetic. The movement was influenced by the bold geometry of Cubism, the vivid colours of the Ballet Russes, and often incorporated colourful and exotic gemstones such as carved jade, emerald, coral, lapis lazuli, and onyx. “No barriers between artists and craftsmen", a philosophy of the Bauhaus movement, led to some beautifully paired-back and simplified forms. Millegrain was used to accent gem settings, and geometric designs and motifs were widely incorporated into the futuristic, streamlined styles of early 20th century modernism.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
