Victorian Bog Oak Mourning Cross
A remarkable 19th century cross pendant fashioned from bog oak, a type of fossilised wood, usually from Ireland, that became popular during the 1850s. In an unusual mix of symbolism, the cross comprises four bunches of wheat, tied in the middle. Despite the obvious (material) similarities to the Brigid's cross, this one has the distinctive form of a Christian cross.
Wheat was a popular symbol in the sentimental Victorian age, representing both eternal life and the cyclical nature of life and death through its ability to regenerate and also a long, abundant and fruitful life well lived.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
