Scottish Penannular Brooch
Charming Scottish brooch - or cloak pin - dating from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1870. The design is known as a Celtic, or penannular, brooch; basically it's a simple torque with sliding pin that pierces the garment then slips through the gap in the frame to safely secure it in place. From wikipedia: "Beginning as utilitarian fasteners in the Iron Age and Roman period, they are especially associated with the highly ornate brooches produced in precious metal for the elites of Ireland and Scotland from about 700 to 900, which are popularly known as Celtic brooches or similar terms."
This one's crafted in sterling silver and inlayed with colourful decorative agates and paste gemstones. A gorgeous example of Scottish "pebble jewellery".

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
