Persian Boteh "Paisley" Brooch
A delightful antique boteh (or buta) brooch dating from the early 20th century. The boteh is a Persian motif shaped like an almond or pine-cone with a sharp, curled point at the top. The motif became known in Europe in the 19th century, featuring on imported Kashmiri textile patterns that eventually became known as paisleys. Boteh translates from the Persian language as 'flower', but it's thought that the design was originally inspired by the Zoroastrian symbol of eternity and life: the convergence of a stylized floral spray and a cypress tree. This brooch is crafted in 22ct gold and set with a vivid Persian turquoise centre bordered by rubies with pearls and diamonds at the base. If brooches aren't your thing, we can have it made into a pendant quite easily... get in touch to discuss.

We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
