Neoclassical 'Magical Amulet' Intaglio Fob
A remarkable piece of 19th century history in the form of a neoclassical 'Magical Amulet' intaglio. The carving depicts the Egyptian god Osiris, in mummified form, alongside an alter (in the Roman style) that features the Greek vowels "αεηιουω". The vowels were considered powerful when spoken, and here represent a magical formulae that was popular around the 3rd to 4th centuries AD. Such amulets, aka 'magical gems', would have been purchased to protect against a particular situation or ailment. The reverse, as well as the obverse, of such ancient examples would also be engraved, often with a specific magical spell or inscription.
The stone is mounted in a period fob setting, crafted in 15ct yellow gold and dating from the early Victorian period, circa 1850.

We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
