Vintage Lucky 13 Charm
A solid gold "Lucky Thirteen" charm dating from the 1960s. Lucky Thirteen? But isn't it... unlucky?
Well, it's complicated. Many in the UK (14% per a survey) view the number as unlucky, even to the point that tall buildings sometimes skip from floor 12 to 14, houses numbered 13 sell for less money (or are simply omitted from new developments), and London Eye pod number 13 was replaced by 33 (there are 32 pods in total). There's even name for the fear of the number: Triskaidekaphobia.
So where did this superstition come from? There is no one clear answer. Christianity: there were 13 people at Christ's 'Last Supper', and the betrayer Judas Escariot was sat in seat number 13. Norse myth: Loki, the god of mischief an deception who's ultimately blamed for Ragnarok - the end of the world - was the 13th guest at a dinner of the gods where he tricks one of Odin's sons, Hod, into killing another, the beloved Baldr. Witchcraft: 13 is the number of witches needed to form a coven. Or was it the Victorians, with their interest in folklore and God, who we should hold most responsible? They took the number - 13 - and the day Christ was crucified - Friday - and multiplied them together to create the turbocharged unluck of Fridays the 13th.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
