Regency Maltese Cross Locket
A remarkable 19th century Maltese cross pendant dating from the Georgian Regency period, circa 1815. The cross bears a striking similarity to one features on the cover of the British Museum Press's 1978 book Jeweller's Art: Hull Grundy Gift to the British Museum (by Charlotte Gere & Hugh Tait), with identical carved chalcedony arms. The middle of this one is somewhat different, however; it's likely a little earlier than the Hull Grundy example with its intricate cannetille goldwork and beautifully textured surfaces. There are two locket compartments, one furnished with a woven lock of hair surrounded by natural pearls, the other remaining empty. The craftsmanship is extraordinary, built in 18 carat gold with meticulous attention to detail... it is, truly, "museum quality".

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved, often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
