Lost Owl Hare & Moon Signet Ring
Custom engraved signet ring by Lost Owl. A hare tumbles down across the darkened face of the crescent moon...
Not so long ago, many country folk supplemented their meagre incomes by foraging food in the wild. In those days there were four farm workers who hunted together in the evenings after work. They were in the habit of leaving their tools at the cottage of an old woman who lived by herself just beyond the village. There were some villagers, suspicious and small minded, who called the old woman a witch and blamed her for all their mishaps and malaises. Yet there were others who secretly beat a path to her door by moonlight - seeking her help. The hunters rarely saw the old women, as she was often away from the cottage at dawn and dusk but they usually left her a little loaf of barely by way of thank you.
In was on an evening in early September they first saw a glimpse of the pure white hare as is raced over a stubble field before darting down the river valley and disappeared into a dense copse of trees. From then on they became obsessed with the idea of catching this rare and magical creature but try as they might the hare was too cunning for the hunters and too fast for their dogs. Like many men, however, they were proud and stubborn and desperate to prove their prowess as hunters. And so they laid a plan
On a soft autumn evening when the Harvest Moon was rising huge and heavy above the ridgeway they spotted the hare once more nimbling along the edge of the copse. They sent their dogs to flush her out. She startled when she saw them and ran like white lightning zig zagging across the field, ears flat against her body, back legs stretching out beyond her front legs as she raced. She headed for a gateway between a thick hedge of hawthorn and holly. But there, hiding on the other side, were two more men and two more dogs.
The air was pierced by the sounds of frenzied snarling and then a high-pitched squeal. The Hare was tossed into the air, her white fur now flecked with red blood. She landed on the top of a thorny hedge and badly wounded. Using the last of her strength she scrambled painfully along the hedge in to the safety of the wild woods.
The hunters, admitting defeat, made their way back to the old women's cottage to retrieve their tools. When they arrived the door was ajar and as they peered inside the cottage their faces drained of colour. There lying on the floor in a mangled heap, with torn clothes and bleeding body was the old women. Filled with fear and guilt the men grabbed their tools and fled. All except the youngest of the four. Noticing she was still breathing he lifted her body, as light as a bird, on the bed. All night he stayed by her bedside, tending her fire and holding her head as he gave her tiny sips of water from a cup. He stayed in the cottage for two weeks nursing the old women until she'd regained her strength and her wounds had almost healed. Then, one morning she held his hand, looked at him with a wrinkled smile, releasing him from his duties.
The men never saw the white hare again and never thought of hunting her. However many claim, when out walking by the light of the Harvest Moon, to have seen a flash of white fur, streaking across the fields. - Telling the Seasons, Chapter 9, Martin Maudsley (2022)
