Edwardian Niello Chain
An exquisite antique silver watch chain necklace with stripy niello and rose gold vermeil links. At over 35 grams, it's unusually substantial and fastens with a dog clip and a huge bolt ring - both also crafted in stripy niello silver. The length is 18 inches and the two clasps give it good versatility.
The striped pattern was created using the niello technique which involves filling engraved or etched designs on metal surfaces with a powdered black alloy typically made up of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead. When heated, the niello mixture melts into the recesses, creating a striking contrast against the polished metal surface. This technique was used by the ancient Egyptians and Romans and, as a result of the Roman occupation and migration period, niello spread throughout Europe.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
