Inside the gates defending the Spanish Republic is a somewhat disorganised coalition of workers militia, civilians and international volunteers. They are politically and socially diverse and it would seem the odds are stacked against them.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEverywhere inside Madrid rings out the cry \u003cem\u003e“\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e¡No pasaran!\u003c\/strong\u003e”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe words of the fiery and charismatic Dolores Ibárruri, a Republican leader better known as \u003cem\u003eLa Pasionaria\u003c\/em\u003e (‘The Passionflower’).  Her speeches are legendary and these words gave the Spanish Republicans the courage and unity to face the fascist army.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAnd they did not pass\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAgainst the odds, the Republicans held and lived to fight another day.  Although the city eventually fell in 1939 the slogan remains,  inspiring all those who would stand up to forces of authoritarianism and hatred around the world.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA Paperclip Chain \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWearing a paperclip on one's lapel was an idea started with students and teachers during the Nazi occupation of Norway in WWII.
