Before the suffragettes of the early 20th Century there was universal male suffrage. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLife for the working class in Britain post industrial revolution was grim and since they were entirely excluded from the democratic process they had no power to effect change. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Chartists\u003c\/em\u003e (so named after the \u003cem\u003ePeoples Charter\u003c\/em\u003e of 1838) demanded all men over the age of 21 have a right to vote irrespective of wealth or class.  The mass movement swept through the industrial centres of Britain.  It was a vibrant, inclusive and radical counter culture centred around a massive network of newspapers, social clubs, churches, adult education, family events, radical poetry and song that built community, pride and class solidarity. They channelled working class anger to demand political reform.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePosy inscribed inside this band is inspired by the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/0HXxT7CyTrKnWQCa1ykyA7?si=02ae3190ab9148e2\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eChartist Anthem\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, a song by Ben Boucher (1847) and the line:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“...the sons of our sons are listening,” \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e…packs a hell of a punch.  How often in the last 5 years have we been told we are living through unprecedented times? It certainly feels like some kind of pivotal moment in history. How will the future remember us?
