Georg Jensen Modernist Supernova Brooch
“DO NOT FOLLOW FASHION, BUT BE GUIDED BY THE PRESENT.”
- Georg Jensen
An exceptionally rare piece by Danish designer Georg Jensen. Crafted in 18 carat gold, it's remarkable brutalist supernova brooch dating from the 1970s, and it's far removed from their typical sleek, silver offerings. It's set with an array of vibrant blood-red rubies and icy white diamonds, it's signed by Georg Jensen (GJ Ld), and bears English import marks from the year 1972. Although Jensen was one of the leading innovators in 20th century modernism, indeed one of the few 20th century jewellers to become a true household name, their works virtually never look like this... it's much more akin to the British post-war modernists (Gerda Flöckinger, Gillian Packard, Andrew Grima, Kutchinsky, et al.) and the goldwork is sublime: organic, textured, hand-crafted.
Some context: "Compared to the extent of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the early part of the century, the new enthusiasm for hand-made artefacts of all kinds has grown immensely everywhere since the end of World War II. It still had its roots, however, in the ideological conflict that pitted man against machines and preferred the imperfection of the human hand to the cold, mechanized and uniform finish of the machine. By the early 1960s, western Europe and America had had their fill of mass-produced articles for all aspects of life. No one would seriously consider acquiring a hand-made refrigerator or automobile, but the areas where personal individuality could be exercised were getting smaller and smaller in this new age."

A healthy patina and the odd scuff/scrape are quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
