celtic-pebble-cross-pendant
Celtic Pebble Cross Pendant

Somewhat unusual Scottish cross pendant dating from the mid Victorian period, circa 1870. The silver construction and cut jasper agates - red, grey, and mottled - are a clear giveaway that this is an example of Scottish pebble jewellery, but there are also gothic and Celtic influences going on. It's big, and the orange and pink cabochon stones are citrine and foiled rock crystal respectively.

Scottish "pebble" jewellery became popular during the 19th century, after queen Victoria (supposedly) took a liking to the style. Characterised by its use of the interesting and colourful agates found throughout Scotland, the stones sourced by collectors who scoured the highlands and eastern coasts, always on the lookout for new deposits, then cut and shaped by highly skilled and innovative lapidaries, before they were usually set in silver. The gem cutters of Edinburgh's 'New Town' produced the majority of the work, peaking in the 1870s when the number of people employed in jewellery manufacture is said to have exceeded two thousand.

Era: Victorian, circa 1870

Size: 7.9cm (including bail) by 4.7cm

Stones: Jasper Agate, Rock Crystal

Marks: None, tested as silver

Condition: Great antique condition; light wear consistent with age including a couple of minor chips to the agate - see images.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0555/7387/2952/files/celtic-pebble-cross-pendant-1001247.jpg?v=1774734378
