art-deco-silver-guard-chain
Art Deco Silver Guard Chain

A long guard chain in silver dating from the early 20th century, circa 1920. The stamps - two fish in a spade shaped cartouche - tell us it was made in Romania between 1906 and 1926, and given the Art Deco, almost modernist, flavour of the links I'd hazard it was made towards the end of that window. It's 61 inches long, enough to be worn doubled or tripled, and fastens with two clasps: a dog clip and a bolt ring. The Romanian silver marks are rather beautiful: two dolphins facing each other, heads down and tails up, representing Dobruja, the region between the lower Danube and the Black Sea (a motif that's said to represent the Romanian coastline, and featured on Romania's royal arms from 1872 to 1921).

Era: Art Deco, circa 1920

Length: 61 inches

Links: 17.5mm by 6mm

Marks: Romanian marks for 800 silver

Condition: Great antique condition; light patina.
