18th-century-mughal-enamel-ring
18th Century Mughal Enamel Ring

An exquisite Mughal ring made in northern India during the 18th century, circa 1760. The head is set with four coloured gemstones: a pink tourmaline, pink-foiled rock crystal, and two pear-shaped white topaz. The shoulders, gallery to the sides of the stones, and the back of the head feature brightly coloured enamel work incorporating red flowers, greens, blues, and black-and-white polkadots - all wonderfully complementing the rich, 22 carat gold.

Jewellery of the Mughal period (1526 to 1857) has a distinct and luxurious aesthetic that's unlike anything else. Characterised by rich, high carat gold (like 22/23 carat), colourful gemstones, intricate enamel work and motifs drawn from nature - particularly flowers and birds - the artistic sophistication arguably peaked during the 17th century. The jewellery was, in essence, a melting pot of cross-cultural assimilation, borrowing and incorporating elements from: Persian and Islamic crafts - use of symmetry and geometric patterns, floral motifs such as the lotus, poppy, and iris, and enamelling to the gallery and underside of the head; indigenous Indian craft - the nearly-pure gold and an almost spiritual reverence for gemstones and the Kundan technique of setting them; and, during the 17th century, trade with Europe introduced new gemstone cutting practises and tweaks to the enamelling (like the tiny polkadots you can see on this ring).

Era: 18th Century, circa 1760

Stones: Tourmaline, rock crystal, topaz

Head: 15.4mm by 12.4mm

Ring size: K 1/2 or 5.5 US.
