Each end features an heraldic emblem: a greyhound is the family crest, and a full heraldic achievement with shield, helmet, mantling and the greyhound crest at the top. The latter full arms would have been used to seal formal correspondence, deeds, documents etc, whilst the greyhound crest was reserved for more personal letters. A hold through the middle of the central ball is for cord or ribbon so it could hang from a belt.
